I want to talk about how I feel as we enter into a new year.
I feel that as I age I have an better understanding of what balance and looking after myself is all about.
Looking after ourselves in our 60's becomes even more essential.
The 60s can be seen as a time for relaxation, but they can also be a remarkable opportunity for personal growth and self-discovery.
Embracing self-care and mantaining our health and wellbeing is setting up our routines and motivation for aging well.
These benefits are for our phyical and our mental health.
I want to talk about areas that help me and areas that I have learnt to improve in. I now know that sitting and relaxing is not a waste of time.
Observing life around us and taking in nature is stimulating and relaxing for the mind and body.
I would like to share goals that I have set and ways that I can connect things that I love into self care.
Understanding the Importance of Self-Care
Self-care is not just a luxury. It is a necessity for a fulfilling life, especially in your 60s. Changes during these years can be many and can sometimes come with huge adjustments. These can be retirement, shifts in family situations or there can be health challenges.
Self-care includes activities that promote well-being, health, and happiness.
This could involve physical fitness, social connections, or simple just a walk in the park.
For example, studies show that individuals who engage in regular self-care activities have a 30% increase in overall happiness.
When we realise this, it is then a matter of creating space to make it a priority.
Physical Health: Move Your Body
Regular physical activity is a cornerstone of self-care.
Consider activities you enjoy and can easily incorporate into your daily life. Aim for at least 3-4 hours of moderate aerobic activity per week,
Activities can include walking briskly, swimming, weights and exercise classes, dancing and generally getting out and about.
The key is to find joy in the movement rather than pushing yourself to the extremes.
Finding time to include gentle stretches or a short yoga session, to enhance flexibility and to help your mind as well as your body.
Mental Wellness: Feed Your Mind
While exercise is essential, nurturing your mental wellness is just as important. Keeping your brain active is crucial for maintaining cognitive health.
You can engage in stimulating activities:
such as reading
completing puzzles
or learning a new skill.
There are so many things available on line or in person.
Learning a language is a challenging but another fabulous way to stimulate the brain.
Many community colleges and local organizations offer classes, from art to technology, that help stimulate both your intellect and creativity.
Additionally, practicing mindfulness or meditation for just 5 to 10 minutes a day can significantly reduce stress and improve emotional health.
Social Connections: Build Relationships
Maintaining connections with family and friends becomes increasingly important as we age. A strong social network can bring joy, laughter, and invaluable emotional support.
Try reaching out to others who share your interests.
Engage in local events, especially ones that raise money and awareness for charity.
I have registered already for 3 charity events in the first part of 2025. I find that if I register early it gives me direction and motivation and also once you have paid for your registration, you are committed.
Reaching out to have conversations with family and friends can help to keep connected. If in person is a problem, the internet can be fabulous for keeping conected.
Enjoying Hobbies and Simple Pleasures
As we focus on responsibilities, we often neglect our passions. Your 60s offer a wonderful chance to rediscover old hobbies or explore new ones. Whether it's gardening, crafting, cooking or many other pleasure, dedicating time to your interests can be deeply satisfying.
Sometimes it is just the simple pleasures like watching the sunrise or sunset. Being present in these moments can greatly enhance your overall happiness.
Celebrate your milestones, whether they are big or small.
Recognising your achievements is vital for your self-care.
Indulging in Self-Care Rituals
Creating a self-care ritual can turn ordinary days into special occasions. Small actions, like treating yourself to a spa day, or going to the movies can significantly boost your mood.
I have been to the movies 3 times in the past 3 weeks and each of the films were amazing. I always pick films that are feel good movies or about someones life.
The 3 that I have seen recently and I would recommend all three are:
Wicked
Mufasa
Better man.
Focus on nourishing your body with wholesome foods. Aim to include a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet and ensure you stay hydrated. Good nutrition directly impacts both physical and mental health.
Consider keeping a gratitude journal. Take a few moments each day to write down things you are thankful for. This simple practice can improve your mindset and promote a more optimistic outlook on life.
Your Journey Awaits
Embracing self-care in your 60s and beyond is an act of love towards yourself.
It sets a positive example for those around you.
This decade presents a unique opportunity to connect, grow, and thrive and set you up for many more years ahead.
Take the time to be involved in activities that resonate with your soul. By enriching your own life, you also enhance the lives of those around you.
I am lucky to have my husband Mario, my 3 daughters and my grandson. I love spending time with them all.
Remember, self-care is a journey. If we have been used to not putting ourselves first, then it may take baby steps to get there. Each step you take toward nurturing yourself can lead to a more fulfilling life.
Embrace your passions.

Travel if you can,
and savor every delightful moment that life has to offer.
